Empowered Parents for School Wellness Workshops
The Empowered Parents for School Wellness workshops are a project extension of Meet the Challenge! in Iowa. Over the past two years, the Meet the Challenge! project connected nearly 70 schools with registered dietitians for assistance with school wellness environment changes and HealthierUS School Challenge (HUSSC) applications.
In the spring of 2014, parents from twenty sites in Iowa will attend a workshop called "Empowered Parents for School Wellness." Parents will learn how healthy eating and daily physical activity are linked to academic success and the benefits of school meals on children’s health and learning. Parents will have an opportunity to taste new school meal offerings and will engage in discussions about how to improve school wellness environments and promote school meals.
School districts across the state of Iowa submitted applications to receive the workshop. The selected school districts include: Aplington Parkersburg, Cedar Rapids, Clear Creek Amana, Davis County, Decorah, Gilmore City-Bradgate, Iowa Falls, Indianola, Norwalk, Oelwein, Oskaloosa, Postville, Saydel, and Wayne.
The workshops are part of the Meet the Challenge! program in collaboration with the Iowa Department of Education and the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics Foundation and funded through the Iowa Department of Education’s USDA Team Nutrition grant. The goal of the program is to empower parents so that they will be able to lead change in their children’s schools and promote the benefits of school meals to their peers.
