Meet the Challenge!

"Healthy Schools. It's a Team Effort." Teacher Workshops

The "Healthy Schools. It's a Team Effort." workshops are a project extension of Meet the Challenge! in Iowa. Over the past three years, the Meet the Challenge! project connected nearly 100 schools with registered dietitians for assistance with school wellness environment changes and HealthierUS School Challenge (HUSSC) applications. Last year parents participated in workshops called "Empowered Parents for School Wellness." This year, the program is reaching out to teachers with a call to action to incorporate nutrition education and physical activity into their lesson plans.

During the 2015-2016 school year, 20 schools in Iowa will host the "Healthy Schools. It's a Team Effort." workshops for teachers. Teachers will learn how healthy eating and daily physical activity are linked to academic success and improved classroom behaviors. Workshops will be facilitated by Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics Foundation RDNs and will include helpful school wellness resources, including a Team Nutrition toolkit with educational materials teachers can share.

Ten schools will be selected to receive additional RDN assistance to lead school wellness environment changes and apply for the USDA HealthierUS School Challenge: Smarter Lunchrooms.

The workshops are part of the Meet the Challenge! program in collaboration with the Iowa Department of Education and the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics Foundation and funded through the Iowa Department of Education's USDA Team Nutrition grant.
