April is National Preceptor Month, Preceptors make a difference in the lives of students who are learning to become registered dietitian nutritionists or dietetic technicians, registered by acting as mentors and training the dietetic professionals of the future. Our Foundation would like to take this opportunity to recognize the 2020 Nutrition and Dietetic Educators and Preceptors (NDEP) Preceptor Scholarship Recipient, Lacie Peterson, MS, RDN, BCADM, CDCES, FADCES, FAND.

This scholarship is funded by NDEP and awarded annually through our Foundation to a dietetic educator who is a member of NDEP and pursuing a docturate in dietetics. Lacie is currently enrolled at the University of Utah, pursuing a Ph.D. in Nutrition and Integrative Physiology.

NDEP values the critical role Preceptors play in shaping the future of our profession and works with our Foundation to provide this scholarship opportunity. We are proud to partner with NDEP and its member Preceptors who are making such a difference through their teaching, mentoring, and leadership.

Lacie Peterson

“I would like to formally thank the AND Foundation for the generously awarding me the NDEP Preceptor Scholarship. I feel lucky to be able to pursue a PhD in Nutrition and Integrative Physiology. As a first-generation college student, my PhD has provided opportunities I never have dreamed of. I am collaborating with academics and nutrition researchers worldwide. I am currently researching associations between meal timing and colorectal cancer. This is very close to me as this past year my sister in-law was diagnosed with colorectal cancer and has undergone chemotherapy and radiation over the past 6 months. I hope the outcomes of my research can help other individuals with this devastating condition.

Clearly, 2020 has been a difficult year for all. I very much appreciate everything the AND Foundation does for dietetics students and dietitians a like. I know that no other organization provides support like the AND Foundation. This scholarship money that allows me to lighten the financial burden of school since I am also working and do not have the ability to have an assistantship common of PhD students. More so, receiving this scholarship is a reminder that the dietetics community is small, considerate, and supportive. I am thankful for my Academy membership and the ways that I can contribute though my volunteerism. Thank you for making a difference in my life and the lives of so many nutrition and dietetics students and professionals.”
