Amanda Berhaupt-Glickstein

The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics Foundation has selected Amanda Berhaupt-Glickstein, PhD, MS, RD to serve as its Grace L. Ostenso Nutrition and Public Policy Fellow. This fellowship is a collaboration with the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS). In this role, Amanda will participate in the Congressional Science and Engineering Fellows Program, coordinated by AAAS, and spend one year working in Washington, DC beginning September 1 as a special assistant in a legislative area that will benefit from scientific and engineering input, serving on the staffs of Members of Congress or congressional committees.

Currently, Dr. Berhaupt-Glickstein is the Research & Engagement Adviser for the Access to Nutrition Initiative, a non-profit that benchmarks food and beverage manufacturers’ nutrition commitments, practices, and disclosures. Additionally, she is the owner of her own consulting company, ABG Consulting, LLC, where she provides technical support to companies on a variety of research topics. Prior to these roles, she served as an ORISE Research Fellow for the US Food & Drug Administration from 2014-2015.

Dr. Berhaupt-Glickstein is an active Academy member and is a member of the International Affiliate of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, which she joined when she and her family relocated to Japan. She has repatriated to Washington, DC, and is currently participating in the inaugural year of the Academy’s new Leadership Institute.

Dr. Berhaupt-Glickstein received her PhD in Applied & Community Nutrition from Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, where her dissertation focused on, “Qualified Health Claims: Communicating the Scientific Certainty about Functional Food Relationships to Consumers.” She received her Master of Science in Dietetics and Nutrition from and completed her dietetic internship at Florida International University, and completed her BA in Psychology at University at Albany.

Dr. Berhaupt-Glickstein noted, “As a Registered Dietitian and Scientist, my professional goal is to bridge the gap between scientists and legislators, to effectively and persuasively communicate science, and to mentor others to do the same. It is an honor to be a Grace L. Ostenso Nutrition and Public Policy Fellow and an exceptional opportunity to support evidence-based policy. This Fellowship means a great deal to me, and I would not be in this position without the love and support of my mother, father, and husband, who have always encouraged me to ask questions.”

This Fellowship has been funded by the estate of Dr. Grace L. Osteno and Helen and Ed Hintz.

UPDATE: 2021-2022 Grace L. Ostenso Nutrition and Public Policy Fellow Amanda Berhaupt-Glickstein, PhD, MS, RD has accepted a placement with U.S. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand’s staff. This fellowship is a collaboration with the American Association for the Advancement of Science’s Congressional Science and Engineering Fellows Program. In this role, Dr. Berhaupt-Glickstein will spend one year working as a special assistant providing scientific input to Senator Gillibrand’s staff.
