2022 Irene J. Jones Memorial Scholarship

Completing a Concurrent Graduate Program and Dietetic Internship at University of Alabama and Memphis Veterans Affairs Medical Center Internship

“As many of us know, the path to becoming a registered dietitian is a worthy investment. Receiving a generous scholarship from the Foundation not only made me realize that my hardwork is finally paying off, but it helped me with offsetting some of the costs associated with graduate school. I am so grateful to be both a scholarship recipient and a proud member of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, as this organization truly cares about supporting the educational efforts of aspiring professionals. Thank you so much!”

How did you learn about the availability of the Foundation scholarship that you received?

I learned about the availability of the Foundation scholarship that I received through the Foundation's website. I am honored to have received a named memorial scholarship (the Irene J. Jones Memorial Scholarship, to be exact) and I am so excited to put the generous monetary allotment to good use.

What motivated you to apply for a Foundation Scholarship?

Given the fact that the Foundation is the largest provider of scholarships to dietetics students at all levels of study, trying my luck and applying was an absolute no-brainer. To be honest, I have always been very concerned with how I would be able to afford paying for my dietetic internship. When I started exploring internships that required enrolling in a corresponding graduate degree program, my worries only grew. As a result, I applied left and right to tons of different scholarship opportunities. When it all comes down to it, receiving a named scholarship from the Foundation certainly feels the most rewarding. I am extremely grateful for their continued kindness and strong devotion to financially assist aspiring nutrition professionals. I can't thank the Foundation enough for supporting me on my journey to becoming a registered dietitian!

How will the scholarship funds help support your continued success within your educational program?

The scholarship fund will help support my continued success within my educational program by allowing me to comfortably and confidently purchase all of the necessary resources and materials. Both my dietetic internship and graduate program require a laundry list of esteemed textbooks, handy pocket guides, and other specific references. I plan on using the scholarship money to obtain all of these and begin my very own up-to-date nutrition resource library, which I can utilize throughout my professional career. What advice do you have for your colleagues about seeking out and applying for Foundation funding opportunities?

The advice that I would give to my colleagues about seeking out and applying for Foundation funding opportunities is that it never hurts to try. I personally have applied to a few different stipends and awards through the Foundation's website in the past, and I have been denied. It can be discouraging, but it happens, and in the end, I'm always happy that I at least tried.

Scholarship and Award Application and Timeline Information

All applications and timelines for Foundation funding opportunities are made available electronically within the Foundation’s application portal. Generally, the scholarship applications are available from mid- February to mid-April, most award and grant applications are available from December to February, and fellowship opportunities are posted as they become available.
