2022 Dr. Mary Ruth Bedford Dietetic Scholarship

Completing a Doctoral Program at Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey

“The Dr. Mary Ruth Bedford Dietetic Scholarship is a tremendous honor. The funds will allow me to pursue my life-long dream of getting a doctorate in clinical nutrition. This would make me the first person in my immediate family to achieve this goal. In addition, I hope my success and achievements will inspire my Medical City Healthcare dietetic interns as well as other BIPOC students to follow in my footsteps and achieve their goals. Through the generosity of others, belief in oneself, and perseverance, their dreams can become a reality too.”

How did you learn about the availability of the Foundation scholarship that you received?

I received an Academy Foundation scholarship during my undergraduate and graduate school career; therefore, I am extremely familiar with the financial resources available to support nutrition students in their educational endeavors.

What motivated you to apply for a Foundation Scholarship?

I applied for an Academy Foundation Scholarship because I will need to take some time off from work to complete the 350-hour clinical nutrition residency component of my doctoral program. During my residency, I will only be able to work on a part-time basis. The funds will reduce the stress of me having to take on a PRN position to help cover my tuition and other expenses.

How will the scholarship funds help support your continued success within your educational program?

The scholarship will allow me to complete the Rutgers DCN Program in 4 years instead of 5. It will allow me to stay laser-focused on completing my nutrition research in the area of blenderized tube feedings and the 350-hour clinical nutrition residency. In addition, it will allow me to complete my final semester as well as the full program with an A average. The funds will reduce my stress-level and allow me to remain focused on achieving my lifelong dream of completing the DCN program.

What advice do you have for your colleagues about seeking out and applying for Foundation funding opportunities?

I would let my colleague(s) know that even if you think that you will not receive any Academy funding for your educational endeavors, apply anyway. The only thing that we know for certain is that you have a 100% chance of not receiving any financial assistance if you do not apply. In addition, I would let them know that I am available if they need any advice or assistance on how to complete the application process.
