2022 Laura E. Heston Memorial Education Scholarship

Completing a Coordinated Graduate Program in Dietetics at Michigan State University

“Becoming a dietitian has been my goal since I was in high school. Now that I am starting my internship, I am one step closer to achieving that goal. This scholarship is certainly a means to an end, which is earning my RDN credential. But it is also more than that. These funds will ensure that I can place my focus on gaining practical experiences and creating enriching relationships with other nutrition professionals.”

How did you learn about the availability of the Foundation scholarship that you received?

I receive regular updates from the Academy through email, which is how I became aware of the scholarship application. My professors at the university where I did my undergraduate degree also made sure that my cohort was made aware of the scholarship opportunities the Academy offered and encouraged all of us to apply.

What motivated you to apply for a Foundation Scholarship?

As I stated before, my undergraduate program director encouraged my entire cohort to apply once we found out our match results. She understood the financial we were all committing to, and she wanted to give us any and every advantage she could. She stressed the importance of applying but also understanding that these funds should not be taken lightly, as they are an investment in our futures from other nutrition professionals.

How will the scholarship funds help support your continued success within your educational program?

From a young age, I was taught when you are given something from someone else, you treat it thankfulness and respect. This scholarship is no exception. I understand the magnitude of this gift and will treat it accordingly. When I am in the classroom and also my rotations, I am keenly aware that I am representing my professors, preceptors, and now Academy donors. I will strive to make the donors proud of their support and investment.

What advice do you have for your colleagues about seeking out and applying for Foundation funding opportunities?

There are opportunities everywhere, you just have to be willing to find them! The Academy has so many options available, for students and professionals of all levels. It really shows how invested they are in the betterment and growth of the profession. Also, don't be afraid of the application process. Speaking to those who are fresh out of the application process for DICAS, most of the information is transferable which made many of the sections easy to fill out.
