Job/Position Title: Postdoctoral Fellow in Cardiovascular Disease Prevention

Brief description of current job responsibilities: My current job focuses on conducting and examining results from dietary interventions. I’m interested in examining overall dietary quality and composition of a healthful diet on obesity, metabolic syndrome, and risk factors for chronic diseases and the utilization of novel, dietary interventions as conduits to promote health at the population level.
Additionally, I focus on how policy mechanisms can address nutrition- related health inequalities and provide equitable access and availability to nutritious foods.
Award received: 2020 Commission on Dietetic Registration Faculty Fellowship Award
How did you learn about the Foundation award you received? It was through my internship director as well as through Academy emails, such as EatRight Weekly.
What motivated you to apply? While my academic background and research has contributed to my expertise in food and nutrition, I felt that I lacked the hands-on practical skills that people develop during their internships. It has been a long- time goal to become an RDN, but I put it off because I was nervous about paying bills during an internship. I applied for a Foundation fellowship to help cover some of my internship expenses.
How are you utilizing the funds the award provided? The fellowship helped alleviate some financial burdens and helped me become an RDN.
How is the award helping you advance your career and achieve your goals? I now use the skills and experiences gained during my internship as part of my day-to-day job. Receiving this Fellowship award also encouraged me to continue my efforts to become a leader in our profession. I actively seek out opportunities to help others, especially those from diverse backgrounds, to also achieve their goals.
What advice do you have for DDPG colleagues about applying for Foundation awards? Start early! Gather all of the required materials and give yourself time to write and revise multiple drafts. When asking for letters of recommendation include: your resume or CV, list aspects of your resume or CV that are pertinent to the scholarship or award, and a short summary about the award and how it would specifically benefit you. Apply! Don’t let insecurities about not being qualified prevent you from completing an application. If you don’t get the award or fellowship on your first application, don’t be discouraged. Apply again! The names of award and fellowship winners are often published. Reach out to those winners, learn about their experiences, and ask for their advice for completing the application.
Remember that these are your colleagues. Most people will share advice and encouragement.

Generally, the scholarship applications are available from mid- February to mid-April, most award and grant applications are available from December to February, and fellowship opportunities are posted as they become available.
