2022 Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics Foundation Diversity Scholarship

Completing a Dietetic Internship at Edward Hines Junior Veterans Affairs Dietetic Internship

“The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics Diversity scholarship will allow me to achieve my goals to not only become a dietitian but also to show other women of color that while the road is difficult, we are supported in this field and can make a difference in our own way. I hope by receiving this award that I can show all future dietitians that making the leap to move and getting out of your comfort zone is absolutely worth it to support our field and make it greater than it has ever been.”

How did you learn about the availability of the Foundation scholarship that you received?

I have been interested in applying for an academy foundation scholarship since I was a junior in my undergraduate studies. I thought I should not apply until I really need it when I am a dietetic intern, and now my time has come.

What motivated you to apply for a Foundation Scholarship?

Moving 3 states away has been the largest factor in choosing to apply for an academy scholarship. From Pennsylvania to Illinois, I am experiencing a lot of change to participate in my dietetic internship program. In a different setting I may not have applied so other interns could have more opportunities.

How will the scholarship funds help support your continued success within your educational program?

These scholarship funds will ease some of the financial burden I have from moving a few states away. It will free up time to study and bond with my fellow interns and allow me to perform my best in this program. I'm grateful to be an intern at the Edward Hines VA Dietetic Internship program, and this scholarship money will support me in performing my best as I will be well rested and stress free.

What advice do you have for your colleagues about seeking out and applying for Foundation funding opportunities?

To my colleagues, you are deserving of the help you need. Do not hold back in asking for financial support. You are going to make a difference in the lives of others which is so important to society at large. Scholarships are here to support you in those efforts just like your donations have helped various other important endeavors throughout your lives. So apply, change the world, and don't forget to give back.
