eatrightPRO Practice Simulation Series

Practice Experience, Diabetes, pediatRic Online (P.E.D.R.O.)

P.E.D.R.O. is a pilot simulation that enhances and expands internship education by using a 3D hospital and conversation simulator.

Users meet Pedro, a 13-year-old boy, and his family as they learn of his diagnosis of Type 2 diabetes. In the pilot-simulated practice experience, users complete the four steps of the Nutrition Care Process for inpatient and follow-up outpatient visits, contribute in an inter-professional team meeting, and learn about billing and coding.

While completing simulation, users also gain real experience with professional practice resources: the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics’ Evidence Analysis Library (EAL) and Health Informatics Infrastructure (ANDHII).

With the aid of a preceptor to evaluate the results, P.E.D.R.O. is intended to contribute towards the supervised practice and competency requirements for registered dietitian nutritionists.

*This practice simulation was funded by an educational grant from the Commission on Dietetic Registration.

Due to recent technical difficulties with the openEMR system component of the PEDRO experience, we have decided to pause creation of new accounts in the openEMR system as of 5/1/2020. We continue to offer the PEDRO simulation, available for download below. The Academy’s Health Informatics Infrastructure (ANDHII) and the Evidence Analysis Library (EAL) are incorporated into the PEDRO simulation, and we recommend using ANDHII as your method of documentation for case studies. While ANDHII is not intended to be a full EMR, it does allow students to practice documenting within the NCP framework, track their initial and follow up visits, generate ADIME notes, and monitor outcomes over time. If you have any questions, please reach out to openEMRedu@eatright.org.

*Please note: Zip files are large files and may take several minutes to download.

Attention: Unfortunately, the PEDRO application is currently not compatible with macOS Catalina or macOS Big Sur. There are some workarounds, such as running Windows on Mac and downloading the PEDRO version for Windows, or reverting to macOS Mojave. We apologize for this inconvenience.
