Foundation Pre-FNCE® Nutrition Symposia
The Role of Precision Nutrition and Fats in Mental Health
Saturday, October 8, 2022, 11:30 a.m. – 1 p.m.
Registration Cost: $10 donation to the Foundation
CPE: 1.5
Our understanding of the role of fat in human health, specifically omega-3 fatty acids, continues to expand. Despite a general awareness for health care practitioners of the importance of Omega 3s, there remains controversy with regard to its efficacy, and there are major gaps in understanding how different populations, or conditions may most benefit from them. Building off foundational knowledge of omega-3s, this session will take a deeper dive to explore the latest research on how fat, including omega-3s, is showing a scientifically promising impact on different areas of human health, including mood, anxiety, stress and sleep.
This session will broaden the audience’s understanding of the emerging science behind precision or personalized nutrition, as it relates to fats. The discussion will include understanding therapeutic dosing for different conditions, as well as the impact of different types of dietary fats in the daily diet, and dietary recommendations to address specific health concerns. More specifically, the session will discuss how genetics of populations and individuals can determine who may benefit the most from different forms of omega-3 fats, while also taking a deeper dive into the importance of the relationship between EPA and DHA, omega 6 fats, and even saturated fat as an overall approach to health. Finally, we will consider the benefits of adding these fats, as a part of precision nutrition, to fill vital nutrient gaps for achieving overall wellness.

Plant-based foods have been a mainstay in diets around the world for centuries. However, over the past few years, the focus on the term “plant-based” and its myriad implications has skyrocketed. With an emphasis on one distinct plant-based food that has been nourishing humans for at least 8,000 years – the bean - this session will examine changing consumer demands, a dynamic marketplace and emerging research related to the health benefits of beans, bean-centric and plant-based diets. Speakers will take attendees through consumer, retailer and Registered Dietitian Nutritionist research that illuminate the benefits, possibilities and strategies for including more plant-based foods.
