Luc LaBonte, MS, RD, LD
2022 Maxine F. and Arlene M. Wilson Scholarship
Completing a Doctoral Program at University of North Florida
“As a dietitian pursuing a career in academia, my goal is to advance into a position that will enable me to create the greatest impact on the future of our profession. Receiving this award will allow me to invest more resources into the pursuit of a Doctorate in Clinical Nutrition (DCN) and Graduate Certificate in Education in the Healthcare Professions. Devoting more time and energy into these programs will expedite my graduation and translation of the newly obtained skills and knowledge into my instructional practices.” |
How did you learn about the availability of the Foundation scholarship that you received?
I learned about the availability of the Foundation awards through a faculty mentor's recommendation.
What motivated you to apply for a Foundation Scholarship?
Originally, my faculty mentors and colleagues encouraged me to apply. I was further motivated by recognizing how acquisition of a Foundation scholarship would allow me to commit more resources to doctoral-level education, potentially expediting my graduation and translating my lessons into practice.
How will the scholarship funds help support your continued success within your educational program?
Receiving this scholarship will allow me to direct my attention to improving my knowledge and skills as a student, scholar, registered dietitian, and educator. Instead of seeking additional employment to fund my tuition, I can devote my time and resources to getting the most out of my education and networking with other like-minded students and faculty. As an educator of dietetic students, it is my goal to advance my nutrition knowledge and skills to better prepare my classes for the rigors of professional practice. My hope is that the lessons obtained from my academic pursuits will translate into improved instructional practices that will encourage the future generations to continue to elevate our profession.
What advice do you have for your colleagues about seeking out and applying for Foundation funding opportunities?
I strongly encourage current and prospective students to pursue funding through the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics Foundation. Though the application process is quite thorough, it provides an excellent opportunity to reflect on accomplishment, goals, and motivations for pursuing education. I recommend keeping organized notes on all past and current experiences (work, volunteer, academic, etc.), as this will expedite the process and allow for a more accurate application.
