Foundation General Scholarship

Completing a Didactic Program in Dietetics at Texas Woman's University

“Receiving this scholarship helps me spend more time in the nutrition world studying my materials from class. Living in the materials helps me to develop a full understanding of how to ask better questions with towards problems. Better questions create the skills I need to problem solve at an effective high level with clients/patients. Nothing beats getting the tough questions answered right the first time.  Receiving this scholarship will not only help me, but the all the people I get to work with in the future as a dietitian intern. Mastering a subject takes time and if you are working to pay for schooling and internship that is time you do not put into mastering your craft at being a dietitian.”

How did you learn about the availability of the Foundation scholarship that you received?

I learned about the Foundation scholarship through an assignment in my Introduction to Dietetics class at Texas Woman’s University. My professor was Mrs. Kearney our DPD director, and the assignment was to explore and discuss the makeup of the Academy’s website. Through looking at some of the DPGs and MIGs I came across the scholarship page and started filling out the application process.

What motivated you to apply for a Foundation Scholarship?

The increasing cost of college and the cost of internships motivated me to apply. Working and studying is hard, so having some financial help can lessen the time someone needs to work. By working less hours I can spend more time focusing on being the best student I can be. This will get me significantly better grades putting me in a more competitive environment for the top internships. The most important thing is the scholarship gives me time back to practice some of the soft skills needed to be a dietitian intern.

How will the scholarship funds help support your continued success within your educational program?

The scholarship fund will help me focus on my studies this fall. Increase stress is placed upon a student who has to work and attend classes. For me my senior year, these are the hardest class I will take while in school.   Having the ability to work less, so I can focus on these classes will ensure that I achieve the desired grades I need to apply to the internships that I want.

What advice do you have for your colleagues about seeking out and applying for Foundation funding opportunities?

When seeking out Foundation funding my advice would be to join organizations that are connected to the Academy. Any of the DPG or MIG groups are a great start plus your local state level. Talk to you professors because you will need high quality recommendations. If your professors do not know you it will be hard for them to highly recommend you. Be open to everything in our field of dietetics. Volunteering is a great way to meet people can help you learn more about the field and give you other references for applying to scholarships.

Scholarship and Award Application and Timeline Information

All applications and timelines for Foundation funding opportunities are made available electronically within the Foundation’s application portal. Generally, the scholarship applications are available from mid- February to mid-April, most award and grant applications are available from December to February, and fellowship opportunities are posted as they become available.
