Abbott Nutrition Award in Women's Health

Award Purpose:

The Abbott Nutrition Award in Women's Health is given to recognize dietitians who make significant contributions to the importance of nutrition in women's health. Contributions may be in the areas of research, education or service. The award will be given to a practitioner who is a member of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics and has worked in collaboration with others outside the profession of dietetics to promote the role of nutrition in women's health.

Eligibility Criteria:

Any person may apply for Foundation funding and will be given fair and protected-class-neutral consideration for an award.

Candidates for the award can be nominated by others or may self-nominate. To apply for this opportunity, individuals must meet the following eligibility requirements: 

  • Be a member of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics
  • Be a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist or Nutrition or Nutrition and Dietetics Technician, Registered credentialed by the Commission on Dietetic Registration
  • Have worked in collaboration with others outside the profession of dietetics and in women's health to promote the role of nutrition

Employees of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics and related organizations including, but not limited to, the Foundation, Commission on Dietetic Registration, and Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics, are not eligible to receive Foundation funding.

Abbott Nutrition Malnutrition Award

Award Purpose:

This award will recognize up to four Academy members on an annual basis working in a hospital setting who have made a significant contribution to improve awareness of malnutrition and have taken action to address the issue.

Eligibility Criteria:

Any person may apply for Foundation funding and will be given fair and protected-class-neutral consideration for an award. The ideal candidate would work as part of an interdisciplinary team with other healthcare professionals. 

Candidates for the award can be nominated by others or may self-nominate. To apply for this opportunity, individuals must meet the following eligibility requirements: 

  • Be a registered dietitian nutritionist (RDN)
  • Be an active member of Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics
  • Work at least 30 hours/week in a hospital setting
  • Work collaboratively as part of an interdisciplinary team with other healthcare professionals such as nurses, physicians, quality personnel, and administrators
  • Demonstrate initiative and leadership in creating widespread focus on addressing malnutrition at his/her institution
  • Must have created measurable outcome improvements on nutrition screening and/or intervention

Scoring Criteria:

The appointed review committee will score individual applications. Applications will be reviewed and scored based on how candidates meet the following qualifications: 

  • Demonstrate initiative and a leadership role in creating widespread focus on addressing malnutrition in his or her institution.
  • Demonstrate effective collaboration with multiple interdisciplinary team members (for example, hosting nutrition education courses, leading grand rounds, creating and providing awareness literature on malnutrition, etc.)
  • Create measurable outcome improvements on nutrition screening and/or intervention (e.g. improved screening by 20%, increased patient meal/supplement consumption by 15%, etc.)
  • Proactively share materials and/or guidance with peers at other institutions to help create a “movement” to address malnutrition within and outside of his or her institution.

Anita Owen Award of Recognition for Innovative Nutrition Education Programs for the Public

Award Purpose:

The purpose of this award is to encourage the development of and recognize excellence in innovative and unique programs and services for the prevention of disease and promotion of health to reach nutrition and physical fitness goals.

Eligibility Criteria:

Any person may apply for Foundation funding and will be given fair and protected-class-neutral consideration for an award. Candidates for the award can be nominated by others or may self-nominate. To apply for this opportunity, individuals must meet the following eligibility requirements:

  • Be a member of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics
  • Be a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RDN or RD)

Barbara Ann F. Hughes Nutrition Policy, Advocacy and Education Award

Award Purpose:

The Barbara Ann F. Hughes Nutrition Policy, Advocacy and Education Award was established to provide educational stipends for nutrition professionals on the subjects of policy initiatives and advocacy.

Eligibility Criteria:

Any person may apply for Foundation funding and will be given fair and protected-class-neutral consideration for an award.

To apply for this opportunity, individuals must meet the following eligibility requirements:

  • Be a member of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics
  • Must be a practicing registered dietitian nutritionist (RDN) credentialed by the Commission on Dietetic Registration
  • Be planning to attend a conference, seminar or other form of continuing education to gain or further his/her knowledge in policy and advocacy. 
    • Funding may not be applied towards educational costs (e.g. may not be used for undergraduate, graduate, dietetic internship, or doctoral program costs)
  • Preference will be given to:
    • Members of the NEP DPG 
    • Applicants who will use the knowledge gained through the program to:
      • Advocate for expanded or new insurance coverage and payment for nutrition services
      • Collect nutrition services outcomes data; preferably with the intent that the member will share the outcomes data with insurance company decision-makers who can influence coverage decision and payment for nutrition services
      • Directly participate in national policy initiatives (e,g. Academy Public Policy Workshop and/or participation in state legislative food and nutrition advocacy,  state legislative efforts)

Commission on Dietetic Registration Faculty Fellowship Award

Award Purpose:

The purpose of the Commission on Dietetic Registration Faculty Fellowship is to provide awards for individuals with doctoral degrees seeking to become RDNs.

Eligibility Criteria:

Any person may apply for Foundation funding and will be given fair and protected-class-neutral consideration for an award.

To apply for this opportunity, individuals must meet the following eligibility requirements:

  • Have earned a nutrition or dietetics-related doctoral degree from a US regionally accredited college or university doctoral program or a foreign equivalent
  • Be a current faculty member in a nutrition or dietetics related department at a US regionally accredited college or university. 
    • Full-time or part-time faculty members are eligible 
  • Provide documentation of acceptance into an ACEND accredited supervised practice program
    • Full-time or part-time participation is acceptable
  • Preference will given to the following:
    • Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)        
    • Doctorate in Clinical Nutrition (DCN)
    • Doctor of Science (ScD or DSc)
    • Doctorate in Education (EdD)
    • Doctorate in Public Health (DrPH)

Recipients are required to provide verification of RDN status with the Commission on Dietetic Registration and provide feedback to the Foundation evaluating their experience within their supervised practice program.

Commission on Dietetic Registration Leadership Award

Award Purpose:

The purpose of the Commission on Dietetic Registration Leadership Award is to provide financial support to RDs and DTRs to obtain leadership training. The training programs should prepare individuals to move into leadership positions within their organization.

Eligibility Criteria:

Any person may apply for Foundation funding and will be given fair and protected-class-neutral consideration for an award.

To apply for this opportunity, individuals must meet the following eligibility requirements:

  • Must be a Registered Dietitian or Dietetic Technician Registered for a minimum of five years and in good standing with CDR
  • Should demonstrate business acumen, strategic agility and disciplined execution; be recognized for building people capability, organizational collaboration, impact, and influence; be adaptable to change and is recognized for being a successful agent of change.
  • Should possess the knowledge and skills to perform the following activities:
    • Facilitate organization-wide transformation by establishing mission and vision, strategic goals, objectives, and implementation tasks
    • Demonstrate high-level decision-making with a focus on delivering mission-based outcomes
    • Recruit, hire, develop and incorporate mentoring for aspiring leaders and other key individuals
    • Oversee the design, marketing, promotion, delivery, and research of quality programs, products and services
    • Engage in capacity-building projects that create, enhance and/or expand value
    • Organize, design, write and/or implement effective proposals
    • Deliver excellent service to customers and employees
  • Be willing to blog about their experience of attending the leadership training program
  • Be attending a leadership training program that includes skill development in several of the following topic areas: influencing organizational change, organizational development management, financial skills, building strategic relationships, influencing negotiations, strategic thinking or quality improvement strategies
  • Must not have received the award within the last five years

Awards will be available on a yearly basis. Multiple awards may be given. The amount of each award will be determined by the review committee with up to $5,000 available per each recipient.

Prior to applying for the award, the applicant should assess the registration costs and associated costs of attending the leadership training course. Funding does not support degree programs. 

Types of leadership programs that will be considered for funding:

  • Regionally accredited universities
  • For-profit organizations
  • Non-profit organizations

Funds can be used for program registration and travel expenses related to attending the program.

The ability to provide Foundation awards and grants is determined by investment returns.

Ongoing Recipient Requirements:

Recipients are required to provide:

  • The web address and/or information about the leadership course including proof of registration within four weeks of receiving award funds. Failure to do so may result in loss of award and a request for the repayment of the funds.
  • Proof of attendance
  • Submit a summary report to the Foundation and to a DPG or affiliate for publication within 60 days of completing their leadership training. The summary report should detail the benefit realized from the program and anticipated application in practice. The report should be approximately 500 words, including at least three key learning outcomes of the training. The goal of the report should be provide insights for the reader on lessons learned with examples of the leadership skills obtained.
  • Must provide documentation to the Foundation of article submission to DPG or Affiliate newsletter, which will also be shared with the full Commission on Dietetic Registration to be considered for inclusion in their quarterly eblast.

Enhancing Practice through Commission on Dietetic Registration Certifications Award

General Instructions

Award Process

Step 1: Applicant Applies for the Examination with CDR

Before completing this application, the applicant must:

  • Complete CDR's eligibility application for the certification you intend to pursue
  • Receive an email notification of eligibility from CDR
  • Apply for the certification exam with CDR, including paying the exam fee

Step 2: Applicant Applies for the Stipend Award from the Foundation

Once an applicant has applied for the certification examination with CDR, applicants must complete this application for a stipend award, including uploading a copy of their CDR exam receipt. 

The Foundation will review applications on a quarterly basis. Applicants will receive an official notification from the Foundation via email, informing them of their stipend award approval or denial. Applicants approved for a stipend award will be required to submit additional materials to the Foundation after taking the exam (Step 3) before payment will be issued. 

Step 3: Stipend Award Reimburses Exam Cost for Awardees

Applications will be reviewed on a quarterly basis (March, June, September, and December).  You will be notified of your application status by the end of that month.  For example, if you apply in January, you will be notified by the end of March.  

Individuals awarded a stipend (awardees) should complete their CDR certification exam. The exam can be completed either before or after official notification from the Foundation. Awardees will be required to submit their CDR score report to the Foundation as part of their award acceptance form before receiving their reimbursement check from the Foundation. Both awardees who pass and fail the exam are eligible for stipend award reimbursement. 

Specific Submission Guidelines

Award Purpose:

This award serves to support stipend reimbursement for advancing the practice of current Registered Dietitians (RDs) and Registered Dietitian Nutritionists (RDNs). Stipends are available for RDs and RDNs pursuing a Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR) credential for a CDR Advanced Practitioner Certification in Clinical Nutrition or for any CDR Board Certified Specialist Certifications.

Eligibility Criteria:

Any person may apply for Foundation funding and will be given fair and protected-class-neutral consideration for an award.

To apply for this opportunity, individuals must meet the following eligibility requirements:

  • Must be a RD or RDN in good standing with CDR
    • Both non-members and members of the Academy are eligible to apply
  • Meet the current eligibility requirements of the CDR examination they are pursuing
  • Not have received an Enhancing Practice through CDR Certifications Award within the last year

Employees of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics and related organizations including, but not limited to, the Foundation, Commission on Dietetic Registration, and Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics, are not eligible to receive Foundation funding.

The dollar amount of each individual stipend award will be equivalent to the current examination fee of the CDR Advanced Practitioner Certification in Clinical Nutrition or CDR Board Certified Specialist Certification completed.

Awarded applicants are required to submit their CDR score report to the Foundation to receive their stipend award reimbursement.

E. Neige Todhunter Memorial Doctoral Award

Award Purpose:

The purpose of the E. Neige Todhunter Memorial Doctoral Award is to provide financial support to a master-prepared dietetics educator or practitioner for doctoral study in nutrition and dietetics, public health nutrition or food systems management. The award will:

  1. Address the shortage of dietetics educators with terminal degrees by increasing the pool of registered dietitians with doctorates.
  2. Enhance the quality and effectiveness of teaching and administering dietetics programs by fostering further education of faculty.
  3. Promote career development of dietetics educators by improving promotion and tenure opportunities.
  4. Enhance retention of dietetics professionals by facilitating the transition from practice site to college teaching.
  5. Commemorate Dr. Todhunter's commitment to the advanced education of dietitians.

Eligibility Criteria:

Any person may apply for Foundation funding and will be given fair and protected-class-neutral consideration for an award.

To apply for this opportunity, individuals must meet the following eligibility requirements:

  • Be a registered dietitian
  • Be an active Academy member
  • Be admitted to a doctoral program in nutrition and dietetics, public health nutrition or food systems management. Applicants may be enrolled in the program part-time, but a full-time course load must be completed for the semester for which the fellowship is awarded
  • Demonstrate potential for leadership in the profession
  • Have a career goal of teaching in an ACEND accredited/approved dietetics education program.
  • Preference will be given to those who have had three or more years experience as faculty or preceptors for students in dietetic education programs.

First International Nutritionist/Dietitian (FIND) Fellowship for Study in the USA

Award Purpose:

This fellowship was established to assist foreign nationals who are pursuing postgraduate work in the USA and have a clearly articulated plan to return to their country. The fellowship award will be given to deserving, promising nutritionists/dietitians who intend to practice in a developing country with whose culture they are familiar.

Eligibility Criteria:

Any person may apply for Foundation funding and will be given fair and protected-class-neutral consideration for an award.

To apply for this opportunity, individuals must meet the following eligibility requirements:

  • Must be a foreign national who is pursuing postgraduate work in nutrition and dietetics within the United States
  • Must have a clearly articulated plan to return to their country or another developing country with whose culture the applicant is familiar
  • Preference will be given to (1) those who come from a developing country and (2) those who have a high financial need

Employees of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics and related organizations including, but not limited to, the Foundation, Commission on Dietetic Registration, and Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics, are not eligible to receive Foundation funding.

Fellowship monies may be used to enable attendance at workshops, seminars, etc. For postgraduate tuition or internship, the applicant must prove that he or she has been accepted at the institution and that the funds for which he or she applies will be used within that year. If recipients do not return to practice in a developing country with a culture with which they are familiar, they will be asked to return the fellowship money.

Ongoing Recipient Requirements:

The recipient is required to report and document how the total funds were used. The recipient must return to practice in a developing country with a culture with which they are familiar.

Food and Culinary Professionals DPG Communications and Educational Award

Award Purpose:

The Food and Culinary Professionals (FCP) DPG Communications and Educational Award was established to provide funding for culinary educational enrichment for a dietitian or dietetic technician. Funds are available for dietetic professionals new to their careers, as well as those who are seasoned and wish to expand their knowledge and experiences.

Eligibility Criteria:

Any person may apply for Foundation funding and will be given fair and protected-class-neutral consideration for an award.

To apply for this opportunity, individuals must meet the following eligibility requirements:

  • Be a member of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics
  • Have been a member of FCP for a period of at least two years
  • Demonstrate an interest and involvement in the mission of FCP
  • Demonstrate that the knowledge gained through either a) the educational presentation or b) the educational program will apply to the applicant’s professional goals.

Fund Use:

Registration fees and travel expenses will be funded for short-term study, including workshops, seminars, symposia, conferences, and coursework. The amount of award is determined by investment return of the fund endowment and will not be more than 75% of the combined registration fee and travel expenses; up to a $2,500 limit.

Award funds may be applied towards an educational stipend for professional development in food and culinary skills, or attendance at an educational conference for professional development. This award is not intended as a scholastic/scholarship award for a degree program.

Scoring Criteria:

The appointed review committee will score individual applications. Preference is given to applicants who have served in leadership positions within the Food and Culinary Professionals DPG, the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (district, state, national), and additional food and culinary professional organizations. Preference is also given to educational experiences that would be of benefit to other FCP members.

Ongoing Recipient Requirements:

Recipients will be asked to present information from their lectureship and/or educational activity in one or more of the following ways:

  • At an FCP event during the FNCE conference
  • In an FCP Tastings newsletter article
  • In an article on the FCP website

Additionally, recipients must return a report to the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics Foundation documenting either their a) lectureship appointment or b) educational program attendance.

Frederick Green Memorial Nutrition Communications Experience Award - Student/Intern Application

Award Purpose:

The Frederick Green Memorial Nutrition Communications Experience Award was established to support nutrition and dietetics students in enhancing their capabilities and experience in the area of nutrition communications, specifically related to media and public relations, through a paid experience with an RD member of the Academy specializing in these practice areas. The RD practitioner should be one who can use assistance and provide the student with a meaningful experience related to media and nutrition communications. This must not be a position that the RD could or would normally be able to pay a student to do. Experiences are generally full-time for 6-8 weeks, or part-time for a longer period.

This application is for students and dietetic interns who wish to apply for an experience with a nutrition communications RDN. Eligible students and interns, who meet the recipient criteria, listed below, will rank their preferred experiences within this application. The student or intern selected to receive this award will be matched to one of their preferred experiences with a nutrition communications RDN.

Eligibility Criteria:

Any person may apply for Foundation funding and will be given fair and protected-class-neutral consideration for an award.

To apply for this opportunity, individuals must meet the following eligibility requirements:

Recipient Criteria:

  • Must be a member of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. 
  • Must be enrolled in a college or university program accredited by the Accreditation Council on Education in Nutrition and Dietetics (ACEND).
  • Must be pursuing an undergraduate or graduate degree in nutrition, dietetics or closely related field, or accepted to a dietetic internship. Undergraduate students must have completed their junior year or be a new graduate accepted into an accredited dietetic internship that will begin after completion of the summer experience. 
  • Must have a minimum 3.0 GPA.
  • Must have an interest in pursuing nutrition communications as part of her/his career path

Experience Provider Criteria:

  • Must be an RDN working in a nutrition communications role.
  • Must be working in a nutrition communications environment, such as an RD in private practice or consulting who works with media and/or public relations.
    • Both in-office and remote environments are acceptable.
  • Must be a member of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.

Ongoing Recipient Requirements:

Within 90 days of completion of the experience, the recipient will be required to submit the following materials:

  • A letter from the practitioner who provided the experience indicating that the recipient completed the experience with a summary of accomplishments.
  • An essay documenting the experience and how it will help them to reach their professional goals. The essay should be suitable for publication on the Foundation Website or Academy student newsletter or other Academy and or dietetics related publications. 
  • Examples of projects completed (articles written, etc.)

Gaynold Jensen Memorial Continuing Education Award

Award Purpose:

The Dietetics in Health Care Communities DPG, a dietetic practice group of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, established the Gaynold Jensen Memorial Continuing Education Award in 1982. This award provides funding to Academy members for educational programs that enhance the contributions of the consultant dietitian to health care.

Eligibility Criteria:

Any person may apply for Foundation funding and will be given fair and protected-class-neutral consideration for an award.

To apply for this opportunity, individuals must meet the following eligibility requirements: 

  • Be a registered dietitian nutritionist (RDN)
  • Be a member of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics
  • Have been a member of the Dietetics in Health Care Communities (DHCC) DPG #31 for at least two years
  • Intend to apply the knowledge gained through the educational program to a future consultant role
  • Not have received funding from the Gaynold Jensen Memorial Continuing Education award within the last three years
  • The educational events must meet the applicant's identified PDP goals and learning needs.

Multiple awards may be given. The award is to be paid by Foundation after final report and proof of expenses are received. No applicant will receive funding more than once every three years.

Ongoing Recipient Requirements:

After attending the program, recipients must submit a critique and summary of the program as well as proof of attendance at the event. The Academy Foundation will share this with the Chair of DHCC. The report may be included in an Academy Foundation or DHCC newsletter.

Gwendolyn Rossell Memorial Continuing Education Award

Award Purpose:

The Gwendolyn Rossell Memorial Continuing Education Award provides funding for Public Health/Community Nutrition Practice Group (PHCNPG) members to attend short-term education programs related to public health/community nutrition that enhance the contributions of public health nutritionists to health care. Programs must meet the Commission on Dietetic Registration’s criteria for continuing education for registered dietitian nutritionists (RDNs) or nutrition and dietetics technicians, registered (NDTRs).

Eligibility Criteria:

Any person may apply for Foundation funding and will be given fair and protected-class-neutral consideration for an award.

To apply for this opportunity, individuals must meet the following eligibility requirements: 

  • Be a current member of the Academy of Nutrition of Dietetics
  • Be a current member of PHCNPG for at least 3 years
    • Student applicants must be a member of PHCNPG with no length requirement
  • Must be either
    • A RDN or NDTR
    • A student member of PHCNPG in their senior year of their dietetics program, dietetic internship, or seeking an advanced degree
  • Intend to apply the knowledge gained through the education program to the practice of public health/community nutrition
  • Submit an application prior to attendance.

Preference will be given to applicants who have not received the Gwendolyn Rossell Memorial Continuing Education Award in the past.

  • A written critique and summary of the program

  • An article for the PHCNPG newsletter which summarizes the program and its implications for PHCNPG dietetic practice (details related to date and length should be coordinated with the newsletter editor)

The PHCNPG Awards Committee chairperson will forward this to the PHCNPG newsletter editor. The report or quotes from the report may be published in an Academy Foundation publication and/or PHCNPG newsletters or website.

International Affiliate of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics International Project Award

Please note: the AODA is now known as the International Affiliate of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (IAAND).

Award Purpose:

The purpose of this award is to support projects that benefit the local community through food and nutrition-related projects conducted through international collaboration of International Affiliate of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (IAAND) member(s). The award benefits members of IAAND.

An award will be given to IAAND members who intend to work in partnership with another international food or nutrition professional (heretofore “colleague”) on a project that will benefit the local community of one of the individuals. The premise is that the IAAND member and colleague will have somewhat different knowledge and skill sets that, when brought together, will serve to fulfill a need identified in the community. For example, an IAAND member in country X may have the knowledge and skills necessary to help a colleague in country Y complete a project that teaches a community to improve its nutritional health or to initiate a small pilot study that will begin to illuminate the nutritional concerns of a local population. Alternatively, the colleague may have the knowledge and skills necessary to help an IAAND member complete such a project in his or her local community. Either situation is allowable as long as collaboration and the sharing of knowledge and skills is a component of the project.

Eligibility Criteria:

Any person may apply for Foundation funding and will be given fair and protected-class-neutral consideration for an award.

  • Must be a member of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics and a member of the International Affiliate of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (IAAND). It is preferred but NOT required that the colleague be a member of Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics or IAAND.

  • Award payment will be made to the individual IAAND member with the stipulation and understanding that the individual will be participating in the project and will satisfy the terms and spirit of the award as defined by the criteria.
  • The budget for the project can only include direct costs related to the project.
  • The budget does not allow indirect costs (overhead).
  • The budget does not allow funds for registration, transportation, housing, or per diem to present results at a professional conference (although travel for data collection is allowed).
  • If the project can not be accomplished within the award amount of $2,500 US. Then letters of support for additional funding required for the project must be provided as part of the application. 
  • If funding for the project has been provided by another organization(s) prior to the granting of this award, IAAND requests that the recipient notify the other organization(s) of this award and abide by the rules and restrictions delineated by the other organization(s). If this award is not allowable according to the other organization(s), the IAAND will not be able to grant this award.
  • $2,000 USD will be awarded at the time the recipient is chosen, and the remaining $500 USD will be provided upon the project's completion of the requirements described below

    A final article describing the project and its outcomes must be written for the IAAND Passport.
    • As above, the final article should be submitted to the Academy Foundation, the IAAND Board of Directors and the IAAND Newsletter Editor for publication in the IAAND Passport.

Award Purpose:

The LaVern and Edwin Domel Memorial Award was established to support programs and projects conducted by Disabilities MIG members focused on supporting individuals with long-lasting conditions and/or promoting disability inclusivity in the nutrition and dietetics profession.

Eligibility Criteria:

Any person may apply for Foundation funding and will be given fair and protected-class-neutral consideration for an award.

To apply for this opportunity, individuals must meet the following eligibility requirements: 

  • Be a current member of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics
  • Be a current member of the Disabilities Member Interest Group

Programs and projects of varying scope may be considered, including pilot studies and community projects. Supporting individuals with long-lasting conditions and/or promoting disability inclusivity in the nutrition and dietetics profession should be central to program goals.

Awards can range from $1,000 - $4,000 depending on the scope.  No more than $4,000 total will be awarded per year.

The appointed review committee will score individual applications and will recommend a recipient to the Academy Foundation. The following criteria will be used:

  • Leadership ability as evident in statement from Program Director (35%)
  • Scholastic achievement (10%)

  • Communication skills as evident in applicant's statement of professional goals (20%)

Ongoing Recipient Requirements:

Programs and projects should be completed within one year of receiving funds.

After completion of the project, a summary report is required to be submitted that details how the proposed goals and objectives were met.

Lenora Moragne Memorial Award

Award Purpose:

The Lenora Moragne Memorial Award was established to help advance the dietetics profession in our expanding world and to encourage and support the development of legislative and executive advancement in public policy and nutrition among educators in the Academy membership. This award provides financial support to a master-preferred dietetics educator or preceptor enrolled in a doctoral study program with an interest in public policy and nutrition.

Eligibility Criteria:

The applicant must:

  • Be a member of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics
  • Be a US citizen
  • Have a demonstrated interest in state or federal legislative issues and public policy
  • Be an educator
  • Be presently accepted to or enrolled in a program of doctoral study
  • Preference will be given to:
    • Individuals who have experience as faculty or preceptors for dietetic education programs accredited by ACEND
    • Individuals who have a career goal of teaching in an Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics accredited/approved dietetics education program

LuLu G. Graves Nutrition Education Award

Award Purpose:

This award is given to support volunteer groups engaged in projects and programs of nutrition education for the public. Multiple awards may be given. Award amount is determined by reviewers with a minimum award of $500 and a maximum award of $1,000. Multiple projects may be funded.

Eligibility Criteria:

Any person may apply for Foundation funding and will be given fair and protected-class-neutral consideration for an award.

To apply for this opportunity, individuals must meet the following eligibility requirements: 

  • Any group may apply.
  • The applicant must be a registered dietitian (RD) who is a member of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.
  • The project or program must be a volunteer effort of the group applying for the award.
  • Award money must be used for programs of nutrition education. Fundable activities include a program or development of materials for use with a specific population group (such as parents of grade school children, preschool children, persons 70 years of age, etc.)
  • Materials developed for the program will be made available without charge to Academy for consideration for publication.

Margene Wagstaff Fellowship for Innovation in Dietetics Education

Award Purpose:

This award recognizes individuals who inspire entry-level dietetics professionals to pursue professional values. Following the excellent example of Margene Wagstaff, applicants should show how they have helped dietetics students to find personal passion, use their passion, take risks and to seize opportunities. Applicants should also describe any programs they have created that foster this type of professional development, growth and pursuit of excellence.

Eligibility Criteria:

Any person may apply for Foundation funding and will be given fair and protected-class-neutral consideration for an award.

To apply for this opportunity, individuals must meet the following eligibility requirements: 

  • Applicants must build a compelling argument that the research or course of study they wish to pursue will push traditional boundaries and bring fresh thinking to dietetics education
  • Applications should clearly articulate the “big idea,” demonstrate how it addresses current trends and dynamics in patient care, and outline a plan for how the insights/findings from this project can energize the dietetics profession at large.

  • Research on curriculum in undergraduate dietetics education. Curriculum is broadly interpreted to include all aspects of a dietetic student’s experience and can include, but not be limited to, the following: evaluation of student competence and learning outcomes, educating students for new roles, devising programs of supervised practice for nontraditional students, development of a means to evaluate experience and competency testing to give non-traditional students credit for professionally relevant experiences, and development of strategies to engage students at the freshman or sophomore level as well as outside the classroom setting.
  • Course fees or sabbatical support for educators to pursue deeper learning about alternative teaching strategies or other innovative ideas in dietetic education.
  • Other relevant work that demonstrates an outcome tied to innovating or energizing a dietetics curriculum.

Recipients must publish an article articulating the innovation in dietetics education in the NDEP DPG newsletter or Journal of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.

Marianne Smith Edge, Expanding Knowledge in Agriculture and Food Systems Award

Award Purpose:

The purpose of the Marianne Smith Edge, Expanding Knowledge in Agriculture and Food Systems Award is to provide financial support to RDNs to support training and educational opportunities to increase knowledge of the connection between agriculture, food, and nutrition. The goal of the award is to provide an opportunity for the recipient to have an experience which will provide them with a broad understanding of the food system from farm to fork. Examples could include but are not limited to: agriculture and food conferences, workshops, university or association based certificates of training, hands-on experiences and mentoring programs.

Eligibility Criteria:

Any person may apply for Foundation funding and will be given fair and protected-class-neutral consideration for an award.

To apply for this opportunity, individuals must meet the following eligibility requirements: 

  • Be an RDN, credentialed by the Commission on Dietetic Registration
  • Demonstrate an interest in gaining knowledge in the relationship of agriculture, food, and nutrition, and have a limited or no previous background in this area
  • Be in a leadership and/or management position in work or volunteer settings
  • Demonstrate how they will use the knowledge gained through the agriculture and food training or educational opportunity in their leadership position
  • Possess a goal of becoming a leader in the agriculture/nutrition space
  • Obtain knowledge through a credible science-based source

  • The award check will be issued once the eligible applicant provides documentation of expenses

Ongoing Recipient Requirements:

  • The recipient is required to submit a report to the Foundation and the funder within 60 days of completing their accredited educational courses or experience.
  • The recipient is required to submit for publication to a DPG or affiliate newsletter within 60 days of completing their accredited educational courses or experience, and share the published article with the Foundation. 
    • The article should be 600-800 words and include at least three key learning outcomes. The article should include insights on the knowledge learned at the workshop or course attended.

Marie and August LoPresti, Sr. Endowment Fund Faculty Development Award

Award Purpose:

The Marie and August LoPresti, Sr. Endowment Fund Faculty Development Award was established to recognize the LoPresti's contributions to the food service, hospitality, and dietetics professions. It supplies continuing education funding for faculty of Ohio Universities and Colleges.

Eligibility Criteria:

Any person may apply for Foundation funding and will be given fair and protected-class-neutral consideration for an award.

To apply for this opportunity, individuals must meet the following eligibility requirements: 

  • Be a U.S. citizen residing in Ohio, with priority given to residents of Northeast Ohio.
  • Be employed as a full-time faculty member in an Ohio college or university.
  • Be a registered dietitian nutritionist
  • Show promise of being an exemplary faculty member in a four-year or two-year degree program in one of the following:
    • Hotel, Restaurant or Institution Management
    • Dietetics/Nutrition
    • Hospitality Management
    • Dietetic Technology
  • Indicate a desire to update his or her knowledge through one of the following:
    • Continuing Education
    • Internship in a community-based setting such as restaurant/food service management, hospital nutrition services, long-term care facility, community nutrition programs, teacher exchange program in one of four areas specified above
    • In-depth educational seminars that would enhance instructional knowledge and competence.

Mary Abbott Hess Award for Recognition of an Innovative Food/Culinary Effort

Award Purpose:

The purpose of the Mary Abbott Hess Award is to encourage RDs and DTRs to make original and innovative efforts (a publication, service, educational program, product, activity, etc.) in food and culinary education. The award recognizes the efforts of an individual primary originator/developer of a body of work. The award is NOT intended to recognize the efforts of a major group, corporation or governmental organization. Nominations or self-nominations are acceptable.

Eligibility Criteria:

Any person may apply for Foundation funding and will be given fair and protected-class-neutral consideration for an award.

To apply for this opportunity, individuals must meet the following eligibility requirements: 

  • Be an Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics member
  • Be either a registered dietitian nutritionist (RDN/RD) or a dietetic technician registered (NDTR/DTR)
  • Be the primary originator and developer of the work
  • Must not be used to recognize the efforts of a major group, corporation or governmental organization
  • While the project may be ongoing, the project or program must have been completed and evaluated at least once.

All applications are reviewed by an Academy Foundation board-approved committee and selection is based established criteria for the award. All applicants and nominators will be notified of the award results. 

Award Criteria (all weighted equally):

  • Demonstrate an original and unique concept
  • Meet a food and culinary need of the intended market/target audience
  • Display creativity and professionalism in the execution or implementation of the effort
  • Describe scope and reach of the project (number of participants, materials distributed, etc.)
  • Document the evaluation components, the results of the evaluation, and evidence of behavior change

Mary C. Zahasky Memorial Continuing Education Award

The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics Foundation Mary C. Zahasky Memorial Continuing Education Award is offering an opportunity to receive a $250 stipend to attend FNCE®.

This award provides continuing education funding to Academy members for short-term educational programs related to the field of Dietetics, to widen, renew and elaborate professional development.

  • Applications are processed on a first come, first served basis. 
  • The number of awards given annually varies.

Please review the following criteria as all applicants will be verified prior to acceptance.

  • Current Active Member of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics
  • Credentialed RDN practitioner for 5 or more years
  • Practicing dietitian at time of application
  • Not currently registered to attend FNCE® 
    • Stipend recipients will receive a discount code to use when registering to attend FNCE®. The discount code can only be redeemed for in-person, full-week FNCE® registration.

Molly Kellogg Nutrition Counseling Award

Award Purpose:

The Molly Kellogg Nutrition Counseling Award was established to advance counseling skills excellence in the dietetic profession by providing financial support for RDs and DTRs to pursue continuing education in the nutrition counseling process.

Eligibility Criteria:

Any person may apply for Foundation funding and will be given fair and protected-class-neutral consideration for an award.

To apply for this opportunity, individuals must meet the following eligibility requirements: 

  • Be an Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics member
  • Be a current RD/RDN or DTR/NDTR credentialed by the Commission on Dietetic Registration
  • Be applying for funding to attend a continuing education event that will advance their skill in the nutrition counseling process
  • Preference will be given to applicants who employ a Health at Every Size (HAES) approach when counseling their patients.

Pittsburgh Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics Leadership Development Award

Award Purpose:

The Pittsburgh Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics Leadership Development Award was established to recognize emerging leaders among students currently enrolled in a supervised practice program and encourage their participation in Academy activities. Applicants can be nominated or self-nominate. The award will cover expenses (up to $1,000) for qualified applicant(s) to attend the Academy's Annual Meeting (FNCE).

Eligibility Criteria:

Any person may apply for Foundation funding and will be given fair and protected-class-neutral consideration for an award.

To apply for this opportunity, individuals must meet the following eligibility requirements: 

  • Be a student member of the Academy for a minimum of one year.
  • Be a student in an ACEND accredited Coordinated Program in Dietetics that qualifies graduates to sit for the registration examination for dietitians.
  • Be enrolled in an ACEND accredited program in Western Pennsylvania.
  • Preference will be given to a member of the Pittsburgh Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.

  • Leadership ability as evident in statement from Program Director (35%)
  • Scholastic achievement (10%)
  • Quality and content of the applicant’s essay (35%)
  • Communication skills as evident in applicant's statement of professional goals (20%)

Preference will be given to a member of the Pittsburgh Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. Consideration will be given to applicants of a minority race when two or more applications are judged to be of equal merit.

Ongoing Recipient Requirements:

  • An essay documenting their experience at the conference is due to the Academy Foundation within 60 days of attendance.
    • The recipient is also encouraged to submit the essay to the Pittsburgh Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics to be included in their newsletter.
  • Documentation of actual expenses are due to the Foundation within two weeks of the event

Rebecca Snowball Reeves Continuing Education Award

Award Purpose:

The Rebecca Snowball Reeves Continuing Education Award provides educational stipends for dietetics professionals working in the area of obesity.

Eligibility Criteria:

Any person may apply for Foundation funding and will be given fair and protected-class-neutral consideration for an award.

To apply for this opportunity, individuals must meet the following eligibility requirements: 

  • Be a member of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics
  • Be member of Weight Management DPG
  • Be a registered dietitian nutritionist (RDN) or nutrition and dietetic technician, registered (NDTR)
  • Be planning to attend a conference, seminar, or other form of continuing education for enhancing knowledge or skills in obesity management or research
  • Not have received funding from the Rebecca Snowball Reeves Continuing Education Award within the last three years.

Ruby P. Puckett & Elizabeth Frakes Food Management Continuing Education Award

Award Purpose:

This award was established to award monies for continuing professional education credit to assist qualified professionals’ attendance at the Academy’s Food and Nutrition Conference & Expo™ (FNCE®) or another conference of professional interest related to food and nutrition management. Up to two awards, not to exceed $2,000 each, will be awarded each year.

Eligibility Criteria:

Any person may apply for Foundation funding and will be given fair and protected-class-neutral consideration for an award.

To apply for this opportunity, individuals must meet the following eligibility requirements: 

  • Be a current Management in Food and Nutrition Systems Dietetic Practice Group (MFNS DPG) (DPG #41) member and have maintained MFNS DPG membership for a period of two years or greater       
  • Must not be currently serving in an elected position on the MFNS Executive Committee

Employees of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics and related organizations including, but not limited to, the Foundation, Commission on Dietetic Registration, and Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics, are not eligible to receive Foundation funding.

If the winner’s personal costs exceed $2,000, the recipient agrees to cover any costs over the $2,000.  Prior to applying for the award, the applicant should have knowledge of the registration and associated costs to attend the program.

The recipient must:

  • Submit a 500-750 word article to be published in the MFNS DPG newsletter
    • The article should address a management topic of the writer’s choice. However, the topic is required to be approved by the MFNS DPG Newsletter Editor.
  • Must submit an expense report with original receipts documenting their FNCE® expenses to the Foundation.

Reimbursement requirements for the second award payment require the award recipient to submit:

  • Expense receipts and forms to the Academy Foundation
  • Required Article to the MFNS DPG newsletter editor and the Foundation

Scoring Criteria:

The appointed review committee will score individual applications. A total of 30 points is possible. Scoring criteria is further detailed below. 

  • The extent to which the applicant has served in MFNS DPG, affiliate and/or district related leadership positions — 5 points
  • The extent to which the applicant has demonstrated that attendance at the specific meeting will apply to their professional goals — 15 points possible
  • The extent to which the knowledge gained will benefit MFNS members and potential members — 10 points possible

The Susan T. Borra Advancing Food and Nutrition Communications Fellowship Award was established to help individuals enhance their capabilities and experience in the area of nutrition communications in a food environment (e.g. food and beverage companies, commodity groups, trade associations, public relations and marketing firms, etc).

This application is for students, dietetic interns, and RDNs who wish to develop or further enhance their communication skills, under the leadership of Kimberly Haider, with the intention of utilizing these skills throughout their career.

    • Matched to or enrolled in a dietetic internship OR

  • Upon completion of the experience, the recipient will be required to write an article about their experience, their key learnings, and how the knowledge gained will shape their future practice to be submitted to the Foundation, Dietitians in Business and Communications DPG and/or Food and Culinary Professionals DPG for inclusion in their newsletter.

Fund Use:

  • The selected recipient will receive a $2,500 award from the Foundation. The experience provider does not compensate the recipient.
  • The provider may request reimbursement up to $500 to cover expenses related to the fellowship only (e.g. onboarding, formal training, etc.).

The ability to provide Foundation awards and grants is determined by investment returns.

Washington State Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics Educational Award

Award Purpose:

The Washington State Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (WSAND) Educational Award is designed to provide funding for professional educational enrichment for registered dietitian nutritionists and nutrition and dietetic technicians, registered; and to provide financial support to dietetic students attending accredited dietetic programs in the state of Washington. Funds are available for dietetic professionals new to their careers, as well as those who are seasoned and wish to expand their knowledge and experiences. Applicants must demonstrate that the use of the funds would advance their careers and that the educational experience is uniquely tailored to their individual professional goals.

Eligibility Criteria:

Any person may apply for Foundation funding and will be given fair and protected-class-neutral consideration for an award.

To apply for this opportunity, individuals must meet the following eligibility requirements: 

  • Be a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist or Nutrition and Dietetic Technician, Registered
  • Be a member of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics and Washington State Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics for at least two years
  • Must not have received a Washington State Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics Educational Award within the last three years
  • Preference will be given to:
    • Applicants who have served in dietetics related leadership positions, whether on the district, state, or national level
    • Demonstrate that the knowledge gained through the educational program will apply to the applicant’s professional goals.
    • Applicants who plan to attend an educational experience that would be of benefit to other Washington State Academy members by the applicant’s presentation of information learned.

Employees of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics and related organizations including, but not limited to, the Foundation, Commission on Dietetic Registration, and Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics, are not eligible to receive Foundation funding. 

In accordance with U.S. sanctions laws, the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics Foundation cannot accept applications from persons in the countries of or for the benefit of countries embargoed by the United States, including Iran, Syria, Cuba, North Korea and the Crimea region of Ukraine, or who are subject to any U.S. list-based sanctions.

Although not always directly involved with the selection process, current Academy, Foundation, Commission on Dietetic Registration, Political Action Committee, and Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics Board Members are not eligible to receive funding from the Foundation.

Fund Use:

This award provides $1,000. Registration fees and travel expenses will be funded for short-term study, including workshops, seminars, symposia, conferences, and coursework.

The ability to provide Foundation awards and grants is determined by investment returns.

Ongoing Recipient Requirements:

Recipients must share information from the educational activity within twelve months of the activity in one or more of the following ways:

  • In a newsletter article
  • In an article for the Washington State Academy website

Additionally, recipients must return a report to the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics Foundation documenting their attendance.

Wimpfheimer-Guggenheim Resource Grant for International Dietitians

Background:

The Foundation’s Wimpfheimer-Guggenheim Fund for International Exchange in Nutrition, Dietetics and Management was developed to provide for the international exchange of needed nutrition, dietetic and/or management information for the benefit of the nutritional health of the world community.

Through this fund, the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics Foundation is offering a new funding opportunity for international dietitians. This opportunity, titled the “Wimpfheimer-Guggenheim Resource Grant for International Dietitians,” allows dietitians from other countries to apply for a small amount of funding to purchase Academy resources to support their dietetics practice.

We expect that most requests will be under $100, with some requests at $200-$300.

Recipient Eligibility Criteria:

To apply, all applicants must:

  • Primarily reside and practice nutrition and dietetics in a country located outside of the United States and its territories.
  • Have the Registered Dietitian Nutritionist credential or equivalent in the applicant’s home country.
  • Identify which Academy resource they would like to purchase, including a link to it in the Academy’s online catalog, called the Eat Right Store.
  • Describe:
    • Why they are requesting funding for this resource,
    • How they will use the resource, and
    • How it will advance their practice.
  • Affirm that the resource will be used only by the intended recipient (applicant). Any use of the resource beyond the intended recipient is prohibited.
  • Must not have received a Wimpfheimer-Guggenheim Resource Grant within the last three years.
