Value: $5,000
The ability to provide Foundation awards and grants is determined by investment returns.
Grant Purpose
The purpose of this fund is to honor Amy Joye by fostering the scientific development of future nutrition leaders, particularly in the areas to which Amy devoted herself during her brief but productive career. Applicants from South Carolina and Georgia are encouraged to apply, although applicants Academy-wide are welcome and will be considered.
A research grant will be given to recipients (i.e., Principal Investigators) working with a mentor and whose projects involve human research and focus on any of Amy's main interests:
- Obesity Prevention/ Weight Control
- Dietary assessment methodology to investigate/enhance accuracy of dietary reports*
- Fruit/vegetable gardens
*Accuracy of dietary reports requires validation or comparison of dietary reports by study participants to actual dietary intake. Such validation does not simply compare two self-report methods by study participants because with that study design, actual dietary intake is unknown. Instead, validation requires comparison of dietary reports by study participants to a method that does not rely on another self-report method by study participants.
For example, school meals (breakfast and lunch) in 24-hour dietary recalls (with various manipulations by study investigators) from child participants are validated against direct observations of school meals by research staff (J Am Diet Assoc 2002;102:386-395; Prev Med 2003;36:601-614; J Nutr Educ Behav 2003;35:124-134; Nutr Res 2003;23:1537-1546; J Am Diet Assoc 2006;106:1656-1662; J Am Diet Assoc 2009;109:846-856; J Acad Nutr Diet 2014;114:1902-1914; J Nutr 2015;145:2185-2192).
Or, 24-hour dietary recalls from adult participants are validated through feeding studies in which foods and beverages for all meals for adult participants are provided at a facility where true intake and plate waste is ascertained by research staff (Am J Clin Nutr 2003;77:1171-1178; J Am Diet Assoc 2004;104:595-603; Am J Clin Nutr 2014;100:233-240).
Recipient Criteria
Any person may apply for Foundation funding and will be given fair and protected-class-neutral consideration for an award.
To apply for this opportunity, individuals must meet the following eligibility requirements:
- The applicant (i.e. Principal Investigator) must be a member of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.
- It is not required that the mentor be a member of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.
- The applicant or mentor must be a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (or working towards becoming one).
- The applicant must have a Bachelor’s degree (but does not have to be a graduate student).
- The applicant will have a mentor who has a track record of extramural funding from competitive research grants or first-authored, peer-reviewed research publications.
- If the average score across reviewers is the same, primary preference will be given when both applicants and mentors are from South Carolina and/or Georgia. Secondary preference will be given if either one of the applicant or the mentor is from South Carolina and/or Georgia.
Employees of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics and related organizations including, but not limited to, the Foundation, Commission on Dietetic Registration, and Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics, are not eligible to receive Foundation funding.
Although not always directly involved with the selection process, current Academy, Foundation, Commission on Dietetic Registration, Political Action Committee, and Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics Board Members are not eligible to receive funding from the Foundation.

- Research must be completed and one abstract must be submitted to present results at either the annual meeting of the recipient's or mentor's state affiliate (e.g. South Carolina Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics and Georgia Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics).
- Note: These two organizations have each agreed to waive registration fees for the recipient if the abstract is accepted.
- Final research results must be submitted as a manuscript to a reputable, peer-reviewed journal and to the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics Foundation (with grant acknowledged).
Fund Use Limitations

- The budget can include only direct costs related to the study.
- The budget does not allow indirect costs (overhead).
- The budget does not allow funds for registration, transportation, housing, or per diem to present results at a professional conference (although local travel for data collection is allowed).
- The budget does not allow funds for graduate student stipends (although wage costs for hourly personnel to collect data are allowed).
Application Instructions
- Selection will be based primarily on the quality of the research plan.
- Include a summary (abstract) of the proposed project. Limit the summary to 500 words. This summary is meant to serve as a succinct and “stand alone” description of the proposed project.
- Use the NIH format for the research plan (i.e., include Specific Aims, Background and Significance, Preliminary Studies [if applicable], Research Design and Methods [including study timeline], References).
- The research plan is limited to 5 pages (excluding the reference list) and should be typed with size 12 font, single-spaced, and have half-inch margins on all four sides of the page.
- No appendices are allowed
- Include a biosketch (NIH format; limit of 4 pages) for the applicant and for the mentor.
- Include a brief (one-page) description of the mentoring relationship.
- Include a letter of recommendation and agreement from the mentor.
- Upload IRB materials (e.g. protocol, assent/consent forms) to demonstrate the ability to begin the project soon after funding begins
The completed proposal and requested attachments must be submitted through the file request link contained within this application. No emailed or mailed paper applications will be accepted.
Scoring Criteria
Applications will be judged on the following criteria:
- Quality of research plan and scientific merit and relevance of proposed research
- Appropriateness of budget
- Feasibility of completing research within budgetary and time limits
- Qualifications and availability of mentor for proposed project
- Relevance of proposed research to topic areas
- Plans to submit abstract and manuscript
