December 2021 Chair Message

Happy Holidays! December is a one of my favorite months since it gives us the opportunity to enjoy time with loved ones, reflect on the past year and get ready for a new year. As we review 2021, we are grateful that our Foundation has had a very successful year, awarding a record number of scholarships , thanks to the generous support of our donors. Our awards and grants season begins in December, when we open our 2022 Award and Research Grants. Academy members can apply for funding for continuing education, recognition, international, and program development awards, as well as funding for innovative research in nutrition and dietetics. Molly Kellogg, RD, LCSW, has had a long, successful career in nutrition and dietetics   , starting in obstetrics and pediatrics, moving to private practice and , specializing in eating disorders and becoming renowned throughout the profession for her motivational interviewing in dietetics. Her counseling skills resources have been used in undergraduate and internship programs to prepare future practitioners for professional practice. A Month for Giving Thanks! November is the time of year when we connect with loved ones and give thanks, and it is one of my favorite times of the year. I am so grateful for the opportunity to serve as Chair of our Foundation this year, and I am thankful to everyone who has helped us make an impact on thousands of fellow Academy members and students through our   scholarships , awards , fellowships , research grants , public nutrition education programs and disaster relief efforts . A Record Year! The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics Foundation is the world’s largest provider of  nutrition and dietetic scholarships  at all levels of study. This year, we have awarded a record  $812,950  in scholarship support to  330  dietetic interns and students for the  2021-2022 academic year . Our Foundation’s strategic priorities include building a pipeline of talent for our profession and preparing the next generation of food and nutrition leaders. During the month of September, the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics spotlights malnutrition to increase awareness and underscore the role that RDNs and NDTRs play in its prevention and treatment. The  Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics Foundation  and dollars raised through its  Second Century Member Campaign  have supported significant research in the area of malnutrition, including The Academy and ASPEN Indicators to diagnose Malnutrition (AAIM) Validation and Optimal Staffing Study. Why is the AAIM study being conducted? The lack of a systematic, universally accepted method of diagnosing malnutrition in hospitalized patients contributes to underdiagnosis, undertreatment, and poorer patient outcomes, as well as pushback from payers in reimbursing malnutrition care. Our Foundation has awarded two first of its kind Advancing Diversity in Dietetics Scholarships to Academy student members, Gabriela Naveda and Latina Robinson. Naveda and Robinson will receive $25,000 each for the 2021-2022 academic year, representing the largest financial scholarships ever awarded by the Foundation. Welcome to Kids Eat Right Month™! Every August, the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics and our Foundation put a spotlight on the importance of healthful eating and active lifestyles for children and their families. The Kids Eat Right program was created by the Academy and our Foundation in 2014 and mobilizes registered dietitian nutritionists, and nutrition and dietetic technicians, registered, in a grassroots movement to share healthful eating messages to help families embrace nutritious eating habits.
