Support Our Foundation by Joining in the Fun During the Week of FNCE®

Our Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics Foundation is the only public charity dedicated exclusively to our profession, supporting nutrition and dietetics. The Foundation does not receive any portion of member dues and is funded solely by donations. The success and impact of our programs are directly attributed to the generosity of our donors.

Our Foundation invests in the current and future generation of food and nutrition practitioners as the world’s largest provider of dietetic scholarships at all levels of study and provides hundreds of opportunities each year to students who are pursuing their dreams to thrive in our profession.

“I am so honored to receive this scholarship. This program is the last step in my journey to becoming a registered dietitian and to have the financial support of the Foundation is a huge blessing. Thank you for believing in me and cheering me on as I push towards the finish line!”

Our Foundation relies on FNCE® events to support our annual programs and make an impact on students like Lauren.  We are asking you to join in the fun virtually this year and support our Foundation during the week of FNCE®. You may sign-up for any of these events when registering for FNCE®, or logging back into your registration dashboard.

Join us for this great opportunity to unplug from technology and get up and moving, while raising money for the Foundation. This year, let’s get our kids and loved ones involved as well and get outside to complete 5k over the week of FNCE® any way you would like. While strides are different among individuals, approximately 6,500 steps equals 5 kilometers, or 3.1 miles. According to activity-to-step conversions by NASA’s Starport Services—corporate wellness program of the Johnson Space Center— here are some rough estimates for the equivalent of 6,500 steps:

  • bicycling (leisurely): 56 minutes
  • bowling: 75 minutes
  • cross-country skiing: 28 minutes
  • dancing: 54 minutes
  • downhill skiing: 38 minutes
  • elliptical trainer: 32 minutes
  • frisbee: 72 minutes
  • gardening: 45 minutes
  • hiking: 38 minutes
  • jumping rope: 24 minutes
  • miniature golf: 72 minutes
  • raking leaves: 52 minutes
  • shooting hoops: 37 minutes
  • swimming (leisurely): 38 minutes
  • wheelchair use (manual): 65 minutes

Let’s have some fun and post your pictures and interact with your colleagues on social media by using the #werundietetics hashtag. Registration includes an event t-shirt, customizable race bib and finishers certificate. Also, be sure to share your participation and fund raise with your family, friends and followers on social media by setting up a facebook or gofundme fundraiser, just like last year’s top fundraiser, Alyssa Frisby. All 5k participants who raise $50 or more on our behalf, will be entered into a drawing for a free 2022 FNCE registration in Orlando, Fla. Register by September 10 on the FNCE registration site to ensure you receive your event t-shirt in time for FNCE®.

The Foundation Silent Auction has always been one of the most popular live events at FNCE® each year, with a wide variety of items that helps raise thousands of dollars for the Foundation’s Annual Fund. This year, by going virtual, all Academy members can participate with 24-hour mobile bidding. The Auction will run from October 12 to October 19. The Virtual silent auction website will be live September 1 for registration, and items will start being previewed September 20 to check out all the great items, including jewelry, handbags and home goods!

While there will be no Foundation Gala to gather us all together, we still need your support. The Foundation relies on Gala proceeds to sustain our programs that make an impact with Academy students and members. Let’s get back into the swing of things and have some fun by dressing up during the week of FNCE® and posting your celebratory pictures on social media with the #NoShowFoundationGala hashtag. Anyone donating the equivalent of a ticket ($120) or more will be entered into a drawing for a free 2022 FNCE® registration. Check out the EatrightFNCE® website for updates on all social media challenges, sponsorship opportunities and special benefits for those who support a table. Donate while registering for FNCE®!

The Critical Role of Nutrition and its Impact on Stress

The human body is incredibly sophisticated, and its well-being can be impacted by a multitude of factors every day, including stress. Certain levels of stress in life are normal and inevitable, however people who manage their day to day stress and show more resilience in coping, tend to be healthier. The foods we choose and our daily quality and quantity of sleep influence how our bodies will respond in a stressful situation. Learn which lifestyle interventions, including identifying nutrient gaps and strategies for dosing for your patients with specific nutrients that can support overall balance in your body to help build and maintain resilience against stress. This session will focus on managing stress, and all the ways it impacts your health. It will also explore the most up to date science as it relates to nutrition with recommended nutritional and lifestyle approaches to optimize well-being.

Food as Medicine: Practical Applications for Registered Dietitians Across Practice Settings

Food as Medicine is based on the science of connecting food to improved health, and a reaffirmation that food and nutrition play a role in sustaining health, preventing disease, and as a therapy for those with conditions or in situations responsive to changes in their diet. Consumers’ growing interest in the connection between food and health is now mainstream, with one in four individuals actively seeking health benefits from food. As trusted allies in promoting food, nutrition education, and access through practical solutions that are grounded in science and credible research, RDNs are natural leaders of this movement. “Food Becomes Medicine in the Continuum of Health” was identified as a future change driver in the Academy’s 2017 Visioning Report, and RDNs have built on this momentum through the creation and implementation of innovative Food as Medicine programs. This session will highlight how RDN-led Food as Medicine initiatives that encourage health and well-being, manage and treat disease, improve nutrition security, and promote food safety are associated with improved health outcomes and reduced health care usage and cost.

Support for this symposium was funded through a grant from Walmart.
