In 2020, Alyssa Frisby participated in the Foundation’s virtual 5K during the week of FNCE® and she chose to establish a Facebook fundraiser to support her efforts. Alyssa ended up raising $600 for our Foundation and won a free registration to the 2021 FNCE®. Congratulations Alyssa!

Learn more about Alyssa below and why it was important for her to run on our behalf. You too can participate in our 2021 Foundation Virtual 5k and raise money on our behalf to be eligible for a free 2022 FNCE® registration.

School: University of Central Arkansas
Program: UCA Master of Science and Dietetic Internship
Current Year: Dietetic intern

What interested you in a career in nutrition and dietetics?
When volunteering as a running coach for a free 5k training program, Women Run Arkansas, I heard so many questions from women about what they should eat to try to lose weight. They often discussed fad diets they were trying and how hard they were to stick to and were struggling to find the energy to exercise after busy workdays. It inspired me to want to understand the science behind nutrition and how the body uses food so I could learn how to translate that information in an understandable way to those around me who need help.

What are your career aspirations?
I want to participate in creating local and statewide initiatives that increase access to healthy foods and nutrition education as well as promote physical activity within communities.

What motivated you to participate in the Foundation virtual 5k run and why was it important to you to raise money on behalf of the Foundation?
Prior to attending FNCE® 2019 in Philadelphia I was training to run the New York City Marathon and sought out information about running clubs and group runs in Philadelphia that I could meet up with for early morning runs. When I found out the Foundation planned to host a virtual 5k run as part of FNCE® 2020, I was so excited to participate because connected so many of my interests. The Foundation supports nutrition and dietetics professionals by empowering them to help others live a healthier lifestyle and that is a mission I want to continue to be a part of.

What fundraising platform did you use to raise the money and how did you go about doing it?
I used Facebook’s fundraising platform to raise money and encouraged my friends and family to donate. I shared many posts related to my running history and my recent experiences of being a dietetics student. I also shared the Foundation’s mission and why I felt like raising money to help empower both current and future dietitians was so important.

What would you say to other students to convince them to participate this year?
Participating in the Foundation virtual 5k event is a great way to connect with students and professionals across the country while also promoting healthier lifestyles within your own community.

Have you ever received a Foundation scholarship, award or grant?
I received the Colonel Filomena Manor Memorial Scholarship in 2020.

What excites you about the future of our profession?
The creative ways nutrition and dietetics professionals are communicating evidenced-based information to patients and clients is so inspiring and shows me how much room there is for growth in this profession. I am excited to make the transition from intern to dietitian this year and look forward to continuing to grow and learn as my career evolves.
