In 2005, following the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics Board of Directors established a Disaster Relief Fund through the Foundation with an initial $100,000 contribution. The fund was created to provide support for emergency personal and professional life-rebuilding efforts of Academy members impacted by this FEMA-declared natural disasters. An additional generous contribution of $50,000 from the Commission on Dietetics Registration, as well as donations from DPGs, MIGs, Affiliates and individual members contributed to growing and maintaining the fund. A second Board directed donation of $100,000 in 2017 following Hurricanes Harvey and Maria kept the fund active. The fund to-date has awarded $296,262 to 264 nutrition and dietetics professionals and students.

In response to recent FEMA disasters including the recent devastating fires in Boulder, Colorado, the Academy Finance and Audit Committee has approved an additional contribution of $100,000 to replenish the Disaster Relief Fund.

Watch grateful Foundation disaster relief recipients, Kalyn Cryer, MS, RDN, LDN, CDE and Martin Hugo Roman share their stories.
