2022 Mead Johnson Nutrition Scholarship

Completing a Concurrent Didactic Program in Dietetics and Graduate Program at Nova Southeastern University

“As an international student, my VISA restricts me from having a job, so I have to rely on my parents for help to be able to graduate. My parents have helped me, and my sister get through college over the past 6 years. They are from Venezuela and the country is going one of the worst economic, political, and social crisis in the last 20 years. It has one of the highest rates of inflation worldwide and crime impedes the ability to do business. Receiving this scholarship from the Foundation will help me finish my career as I will be able to use it as part of my last semester's tuition payment.”

How did you learn about the availability of the Foundation scholarship that you received?

I learned about the availability of the Foundation scholarship that I received via email. I always check the Academy emails as it has helpful information about interesting conferences, topics, research papers, and available scholarships for students or those who are pursuing a Nutrition and Dietetics career.

What motivated you to apply for a Foundation Scholarship?

The first thing that motivated me to apply was helping my family. As I mentioned in my application, I am an international student and I am beyond grateful of the opportunity and support my family have been giving me during my studies in the US. I apply for this scholarship to help my parents pay for my tuition as it is getting harder to continue paying the tuition due to the inflation and the circumstances in my home country, Venezuela.

How will the scholarship funds help support your continued success within your educational program?

This scholarship is a financial help, and it also helps morally and mentally to think that I'm not alone. This journey of emigrating can be overwhelming and to think that there is an entire Foundation helping students like me helps me to keep going and aiming for a bright future. I am about to graduate next year and looking forward to start helping people in their nutritional goals.

What advice do you have for your colleagues about seeking out and applying for Foundation funding opportunities?

I would say to push yourself and apply for those scholarships. Sometimes we underestimate ourselves and feel we are not capable to get them or that there is a lot of competition but if you put the effort on that and share your stories you can inspire others. Also, I feel this application can help you financially but also it helps you to start knowing yourself and asking yourself about your future goals as you start seeing things differently when you are more motivated.
