Christy Walowit, MS
2022 Commission on Dietetic Registration Diversity Scholarship
Completing a Dietetic Internship at Immaculata University
“Receiving this scholarship makes a huge difference for me and makes completion of the dietetic internship possible. As a future registered dietitian, I hope to engage in work focused on LGBTQ+ health, transgender nutrition, body image, and eating disorder treatment.” |
How did you learn about the availability of the Foundation scholarship that you received?
I learned about the Foundation scholarships through the Department of Nutrition at Metropolitan State University of Denver.
What motivated you to apply for a Foundation Scholarship?
I have wanted to become a registered dietitian since high school but faced many barriers as a low-income student. I was motivated to apply for scholarships to make my dream of completing a DI and becoming a registered dietitian a reality.
How will the scholarship funds help support your continued success within your educational program?
This scholarship makes completing a dietetic internship possible and helps me reach my goal of becoming a registered dietitian. In the future, I hope to “pay it forward” by mentoring and supporting underrepresented students seeking careers in nutrition and dietetics.
What advice do you have for your colleagues about seeking out and applying for Foundation funding opportunities?
Applying for scholarships can be a lot of work and it’s hard to put yourself out there. I really encourage anyone who is feeling financial pressure to apply anyway, it’s always worth a try! Most universities have writing centers if you need help with the application, and don’t be afraid to reach out to a professor or advisor for feedback too!
