How did you learn about the availability of the Foundation scholarship that you received?
I learned about the availability of the Carey D. Miller Memorial Scholarship through my advisor and Dietetic Director at UH Manoa, Dr. Monica Esquivel. She shared all about the amazing opportunities that the Academy offers and the positive impact that this organization has on the nutrition community. After doing some research and finding the Foundation Scholarship Platform I was able to then educate myself on all of the different scholarships and awards offered.
What motivated you to apply for a Foundation Scholarship?
I was motivated to apply for the Foundation's Scholarship Platform because despite how extremely hard I work as a student, athlete, and surf instructor I could not financially afford school. However, I believe that just because I do not have the immediate financial funds to pay for my education that that should equate to not being able to purse a higher education degree. This is where my motivation stemmed from when applying to the scholarship platform. My goals are too large to not think creatively and to not put to use the opportunities that the Foundation has to offer. I was a previous Foundation scholarship recipient of the 2022-2023 academic year and receiving my past scholarship was life changing. I knew that when the application opened for this academic year I had to apply and see if once again the Foundation could make my dreams become a reality.
How will the scholarship funds help support your continued success within your educational program?
The scholarship funds will help support my continued academic success by allowing me to put full concentration on my studies. I was so worries about how I would be able to afford my program and now that I have received this scholarship I do not have to worry as much. By not feeling stressed I will be much more successful in all of my classes as part of the financial burden associated with college has been relieved. The Foundation has empowered me to achieve my goals by believing in me enough to award me with a scholarship. This alone is extremely motivating and transfers directly over into my education.
What advice do you have for your colleagues about seeking out and applying for Foundation funding opportunities?
The advice that I would give to my colleagues about seeking out and applying for Foundation funding opportunities is that it is absolutely worth a try and to most definitely consider applying. You never know what the outcome will be and the only failure in life is never taking your shot, even if you miss. The Foundation offers numerous different opportunities and possibilities to receive funding. The first step should be educating yourself on the timelines to apply and the necessary components of what you need to submit. Then, go for it!
Scholarship and Award Application and Timeline Information
All applications and timelines for Foundation funding opportunities are made available electronically within the Foundation’s application portal. Generally, the scholarship applications are available from mid- February to mid-April, most award and grant applications are available from December to February, and fellowship opportunities are posted as they become available.
