Why Giving Back Matters to Foundation Scholarship Recipient Alyssa Frisby

In 2020, I was honored to receive the Colonel Filomena Manor Memorial Scholarship from the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics Foundation during my Master of Science dietetic internship at the University of Central Arkansas. This scholarship encouraged me to delve deeper into the diverse opportunities within the dietetics field. It reinforced my commitment to using my nutrition education to create meaningful, lasting change in the lives of others. Being awarded this scholarship reaffirmed my belief in my potential to achieve my goals and contribute to the profession.

Giving back to the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics Foundation is very important to me. The support I received from the Foundation had a profound impact on my education and is impacting my career, and I feel a responsibility to help others in the same way. That’s why I am committed to fundraising for the Foundation, ensuring that future dietitians have access to similar opportunities for growth and development. Additionally, serving as a volunteer on the Early Career Outreach Council allows me to contribute to the profession by helping shape resources and support for those just starting their journey in dietetics. It's an honor to help pave the way for the next generation of nutrition professionals.

As a faculty instructor at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences, I teach future healthcare professionals about nutrition and healthy eating. In our campus teaching kitchen, students gain hands-on experience preparing affordable, nutritious meals, equipping them to confidently share practical advice with their patients. Culinary medicine is a growing field, and I believe registered dietitians play a vital role in educating other healthcare professionals about nutrition. This year, I received the Food & Culinary Professionals DPG Communications and Educational Award. This award has given me the opportunity to enroll in culinary courses, where I’m gaining invaluable hands-on experience in advanced cooking techniques, flavor development, and kitchen efficiency. These skills will not only enhance the teaching kitchen curriculum for my students but also deepen my own expertise in translating culinary concepts into practical, nutritious meal solutions for both patients and healthcare professionals.
