How did you learn about the availability of Foundation scholarships and what motivated you to apply?
I learned about the availability of the Foundation scholarships from one of my peers and via marketing emails sent out by the Academy. This individual was in my DPD (Didactic Program in Dietetics) cohort with me; we were in a lot of group projects together and have remained in-touch/close since finishing out program. She let me know she was applying and encouraged me, and another of our peers, to apply. I was motivated to apply because it was low risk but, high reward. I am very passionate about my journey towards becoming an RD and am happy to talk about it whenever I get a chance to. It hasn't been an easy one but, it has been rewarding and fulfilling.
Describe the financial impact that this scholarship will have on your educational journey this year.
Receiving this scholarship has positively and wholeheartedly impacted my ability to continue on my journey to becoming an RD, especially with relocating to Georgia for my rotations. Without this scholarship, my internship may have needed to be extended (gone from full-time to part-time) so I could both work and do my rotations. Now, I will be able to continue as planned and have less stress about financials, thus allowing me to fully enjoy and immerse myself into this unique opportunity that is my internship. I will be able to focus and gain as much hands-on knowledge as I am able to and not be distracted by having a job outside of my internship.
What advice do you have for other students and professionals who are considering applying for Foundation funding?
Absolutely do it. It is low risk, and high reward. Like all applications, it can be tedious and time consuming but, having all the required information in one place can be useful for other applications. Furthermore, none of the information required, was out of the ordinary and most of it I already had on hand. This application process really allowed me to sit and think about my next steps, which was vital as I just finished my DPD (Didactic Program in Dietetics).
I would also encourage those considering applying to really take your time with the application, do not rush it, and answer the questions thoroughly and truthfully. Be honest with your intentions, thoughts and plans because even if you do not receive a scholarship, at least you have some ideas for the future mapped out.
Scholarship and Award Application and Timeline Information
All applications and timelines for Foundation funding opportunities are made available electronically within the Foundation’s application portal. Generally, the scholarship applications are available from mid- February to mid-April, most award and grant applications are available from December to February, and fellowship opportunities are posted as they become available.
