Looking Forward to a Great Year!

I am honored to serve as your 2021-2022 Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics Foundation Chair and begin this journey with you and my fellow Board Members. It is humbling to follow a long procession of great leaders who share my passion for the work of the Foundation and its impact on the future of our profession. As a nutrition entrepreneur, my passion for our profession has led to many leadership roles within our Academy, including Chair of the Council on Future Practice, Speaker of the House of Delegates, and Chair of the Dietetics in Health Care Communities DPG. During my tenure on the Foundation Board, I have been amazed by the strategic approach, determination and dedication of our Board and staff. I am delighted to have the opportunity to be part of an organization that continues makes a difference in the lives of thousands of Academy members through Foundation scholarships, award, research grants, fellowships, and disaster relief efforts.

In fact, I was a Foundation recipient earlier in my career, having received Mary C. Zahasky Memorial Continuing Education Award in 2006. I remember how grateful I was to receive this award in honor of such a distinguished leader within our Academy and how I became a life-long member of a growing group of dynamic individuals who have received a Foundation scholarship, award, or grant.

I understand how challenging this past 15 months of the pandemic has been. Yet our Foundation continues to not only survive and thrive, but to provide generous support. In the midst of unprecedented challenges, the Foundation chose to focus on inclusivity, diversity, equity and access by creating many new scholarships and awards and providing much needed funding. Just over the last three years alone, our Foundation has provided $3,077,676 to 1,474 food and nutrition practitioners and students, helping to build a qualified workforce and developing the next generation of leaders in our profession. None of this would be possible without the generosity of our members and donors, and we thank you for your continued support!

I would also like to thank Margaret Garner, immediate Past Chair for her fearless leadership during an extremely challenging year. Her dedication, compassion and strategic thinking led us through an unprecedented year and ensured we were able support our fellow Academy members when they needed it the most. Also, please join me in welcoming our new slate of 2021-2022 officers and board members who are a talented and diverse group of leaders that bring a fresh perspective to our efforts and a passion to our organization.

Please stay tuned for a great year, I look forward to sharing our efforts, stories, and successes with you!

Sincerely,

Becky Dorner, RDN, LD, FAND
