Thank You for An Incredible Year!

As I review my year as Chair of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics Foundation, I am incredibly grateful for the passion my fellow Academy members have for our Foundation and the tremendous support we have received in another challenging pandemic year. It was a tumultuous year as we experienced surges of COVID-19 variants, surges in the stock market, a war in Ukraine, inflation, numerous disasters, and more. And yet our donors continued their generous support of our Foundation, and our Foundation continued to give back by providing resources that empower food and nutrition practitioners to meet challenges today and in the future.

A second year of virtual FNCE® resulted in major support from Academy members as the Foundation offered numerous virtual presentations and events including educational programs, our annual run/walk which included many forms of exercise this year, visiting our virtual booth, shopping at our silent auction and supporting our No Show Gala – all resulting in record breaking donations which helps support our annual programs.

I am also proud of the continued support from many organizations and donors allowing our Foundation to develop funds to sustain and grow our strategic priorities in the areas of inclusivity, diversity, equity, and accessibility. In addition to individual donors, both the Nutrition and Dietetic Educators and Preceptors and Commission on Dietetic Registration generously offered additional funding towards these priorities.

I am also happy to share two recent and significant efforts in diversity and inclusion from our Foundation. Our Advancing Diversity in Dietetics Scholarship will once again award $25,000 each to two aspiring registered dietitian nutritionists of diverse backgrounds or cultures in 2022. This commitment to diversity will be further represented by the selection committee, as its members will reflect diversity in race and ethnicity, gender, age, and experience. Secondly, it is exciting to report our Foundation has its first Diversity & Inclusion Fellow, Marie Allsopp, DrPH, MPH, MS, RD, LD/N, CHES, who will collaborate with our Academy and throughout the profession to identify and find solutions to barriers that our diverse students, registered dietitian nutritionists and nutrition and dietetics technicians, registered face.

Several Academy members partnered with our Foundation to establish Funds that will help them leave their legacy in cherished areas of interest and will have an impact on generations of food and nutrition practitioners to come. Our Foundation continues to be the catalyst for our profession to come together to address the greatest food and nutrition challenges now and in the future.

Lastly, and most importantly, we kicked off the Make it a Million Scholarship Campaign with a goal of raising $1 million dollars over the next 3 years, to allow our Foundation to provide $1 million in scholarships every year. I am confident you will support the next few chairs in making this vision a reality.

We could not have accomplished all this great work without the selflessness and dedication of our amazing Foundation staff and Board. Their passion, positivity and tireless efforts have made my role as Chair an absolute pleasure. I would like to acknowledge the volunteer leaders that will rotate off our Foundation Board after May 31, and thank each of them for their dedication, enthusiasm, and generosity:

  • Margaret P. Garner, MS, RDN, LD, FAND, CIC; Past-Chair
  • Jennifer Nguyen, RDN, Secretary
  • Livleen Gill, MBA, RDN, LDN; Treasurer
  • Ellen Shanley, MBA, RDN, CDN, FAND; Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics President-Elect
  • Samantha Rongstad, RDN; Student Member

Our Foundation will be in excellent hands with incoming Foundation Chair, Hope Warshaw, MMSc, RD, CDCES, BC-ADM, FADCES, and I look forward to giving her my full support as I move into the role of Past Chair for 2022- 2023. Finally, thanks to our donors, advocates and volunteers who drive progress in advancing our mission - all of this was made possible through your generosity and passion for our profession. Thank you for the incredible honor and privilege to serve in this role.

With warm regards and a grateful heart,

Becky Dorner, RDN, LD, FAND
Chair, 2021-2022
