A Fantastic Year for the Academy’s Foundation Ahead

I’m honored, humbled and very enthusiastic about serving as your 2022-2023 Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics Foundation Chair. I look forward to working closely with our volunteer board members, officers, and our fabulous Foundation staff to foster growth of the Foundation and spread interest in the work we do within the Academy as well as externally. We have lots of good news to share!

I’ve been a registered dietitian and an Academy member for over 45 years. During my career I’ve been focused on the exciting and ever-evolving field of diabetes care and education. With a focus on diabetes, I’ve served in numerous leadership roles over the years including in many volunteer positions with the Diabetes Dietetic Practice Group and other diabetes-related organizations including Association of Diabetes Care and Education Specialists and American Diabetes Association.

Several years ago, I was asked to serve on the Academy’s Foundation board. I served on the board for several years, then I served in the role of secretary for a year and last year served in the role of chair-elect. During this service to the Foundation my eyes have become wide-open to the tremendous work our Foundation does to support and empower current and future food and nutrition practitioners at all levels of study through scholarships, awards, research grants, fellowships, public nutrition education and disaster relief. The Foundation’s work is impressive!

One goal I have this year is to communicate the good work of the Foundation further and wider as well as to help us achieve new fund-raising heights so we may do more for more students in need. I believe our work is a bit of a well-kept secret even among Academy members. Take a look at a few statistics that capture just a snapshot of the fantastic work of the Foundation.

And nothing says it better than reading the grateful words from Isabel, just one of our many grateful Foundation scholarship recipients.

Let me end with a note of appreciate and thanks to Becky Dorner, RDN, LD, FAND, immediate Past Foundation Chair. Becky, in her passionate way, led the Foundation ably. Becky has served the Academy and our Foundation in many different roles, always going the extra mile to exceed. Thank you, Becky! And looking forward I am excited about working with our talented 2022-2023 officers and board members. They represent varied areas of interest in our profession and a range of professional experiences. All are tireless volunteers within the Academy and all are demonstrated leaders.

If you are reading this article and are not a regular Foundation donor, please consider adding a contribution to the Foundation on your monthly or annual giving list. Whatever amount that fits your budget is appreciated. Think about what’s doable for you.
